Everyone seems to think that now that McKinley is here everyone is gonna trip over themselves to go get one

Now if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black.
All you AMD fan boys do is the identical thing - even though the hammer/opteron isn't even here, you fascinate that everybody is going to run out and get one of these.

Even though no major OEM has committed to i.
Even though no application software exists for it.
Even though it is only an 800 MHz cripple to date.

Constantine, Re: "Unlike the views presented on this thread. Everyone seems to think that now that McKinley is here everyone is gonna trip over themselves to go get one ( or more ) to replace their dinosaur sun systems."

Actually, I think the thread has some very realistic expectations for Itanium 2. Most people here are eager to see real systems shipping from the OEMs. Unlike Merced, McKinley is not a dog; it performance quite nice, and infrastructure has grown since last year. McKinley is a milestone, and an important one. Windows .NET server is another, and I expect to see that by the end of the year, too. Neither product release is going to cause anyone to trip over themselves to upgrade, but they are both a step in the right direction, and each step brings Intel that much closer to realizing a tangible income for the quarter. I think the thread should start getting really excited if and when Intel gets a positive ROI on future Itanium sales, but it might take quite a few quarters after McKinley launches before we see that.
