The collapse of TDFX vividly illustrated that the gamer money doesn't give a dime about brand loyalty. There may be a few loyal and loud fans here and there, but the money chases performace, which basicly consists of a set of objective performance numbers. Low price also helped nVidia over taking TDFX, which had a virtual lock on the niche market until nVidia barged in with Riva128 and RivaTNT, both of which actually had rather poor image quality when compared to contemporary 3DFx chips. However, it was the FPS number that counted. Obviously, much of the gamer money did not even bother testing the products first hand.

BTW, Paul, it's a discussion board; nothing personal.
