I would say the situation was somewhat between a red card and a yellow card. It would not be right to say the referee was wrong to give the red card, because the Portugal player tackled hard from behind without any chance to touch the ball. On the other hand, a yellow card plus a free kick would not be too far off either, IMO. It's just a difficult choice situation. BTW, if the game had played in Portugal, the red card would not be given.
