Mish, just a couple comments re AVNX

1. Back when the crash was still being called a "correction" by most folks -- i.e., just about everybody I can think of BESIDES you -- on the FOOL, AVNX was supposed to be a future "Gorilla" on the basis of it's super-whiz-bang "better mousetrap" technology. Supposedly, the co was going to stick to one technological niche where it could totally dominate things and make $giga-billions as a result. (AVCI and CORV told similar "stories" in different "spaces.")

Thus, I had to laugh when I first read about the merger with OPLK, because OPLK strikes me as being along the lines of a FNSR, i.e., a rather mundane producer of fairly commoditized doodads and thingamajigs. The merger thus seems to be an acknowledgement that the previous "story" was at best a fantasy, and at worst complete BS.

The new "story" seems to say, "We couldn't make it as a specialist outfit building best-of-breed whiz-bangers, so, instead, we're going to go generalist and compete head to head with the likes of CIEN, LU, and NT."

Presumably, the combined co will keep its whiz-bangishness, but one has to wonder how they'll do swimming with the really big fishies.

I think they'll survive, because, if I remember correctly, (and so long as nobody has superseded their technology in the year or so since I stopped paying attention), AVNX has some really, really, really neato whiz-bangers. With luck, they might even turn a profit someday.

2. I think that "pro forma cash" means, "The cash we WOULD have if we didn't have hundreds of millions of dollars worth of recurring one-time expenses every quarter." <g>

Augie with AVNX i can both show one of the greatest disaster charts and also highlignt George "i will make you money" Gilder.
AVNX was a Gilder super hype, as you see this chart goes down and down many of the spikes UP were via pumps and table poundings from George Gilder.
If you were to go to the AVNX thread you will find names of Gilderites that no longer post on SI as they probably can't subscribe to anything anymore.
Can you imagine the number of people who were averaging down on catastrophe.
How many people were made rich for life by simply flipping the first day their pre-open IPO shares.
In opens like this the vast amount of shares held by pre-open shareholders were dumped.http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=AVNX&d=c&t=5y&l=on&z=b&q=l
Fortunes were made by a precious few.
