I'd like to see politicians that the people recruit, rather than politicians that run for office like we have now. A requirement would be that they don't WANT to be Senator, President, whatever, but agree to serve because they are ASKED. Colin Powell is the only example I can think of. Gerry Ford, maybe. Jack Ryan (in Tom Clancy's novels) is the model I like.

Another requirement would be that they can't be lawyers by trade or training. Lawyer would serve as advisors when needed, but would be prohibited from holding office.

I don't agree that people don't read books anymore. I've been riding the bus to work and do a lot more reading now. I also see a lot of others reading on the bus. We have some wonderful bookstores in Juneau. My favorite is the "Friends of the Library" store where used books are dirt cheap.
