According to what I read in Franklin's bio, things like that (debates are highly managed,) are not new. Franklin introduced his ideas in pamphlets laboriously printed in his press. Others did the same, or used whatever means they had. Today it is much easier to manage things, so that's what happens. I'm not sure it's worse. After all, you and I are debating the point with little effort. Maybe that's a good thing. What do you think?
