Look, we've got a history of supporting thugs we never should have had anything to do with. The Iraq-Iran contretemps is the prime example. Our CIA directly intervened in subverting Iranian democratic processes in 1953, installing the Shah, and very directly contributing to the justifiable hatred of U.S. interventionists among Iranian elites, religious leaders and "the street". The result was the entirely predictable debacle of 1979. Then, instead of admitting the error of our meddling ways, we support Saddam in his brutal turf battle with the mullahs of Tehran. Again with predictable results, the Bush 41 team sent ambiguous messages to Saddam about his interest in securing Province 19, i.e. Kuwait. Yet more predictable results. Our gamesmanship in the "Grand Chessboard" is essentially dishonest, destabilizing and degenerate. We should be ashamed of the way we conduct our foreign policies with such a high handed, cynical and exploitative fashion. The Bush team seems incapable of controlling its appetite for these utterly irritating (to those meddled with) foreign provocations. Guaranteeing a continuing series of terrorist reprisals on the U.S. Which the Bush team cynically sees as being a great justification for further pillaging of the national treasury for military adventurism. -Ray
