The book on military plans was written during the attack at Beaumont Hamel where they blasted the Germans with thousands of guns for 5 days. They then suspended the firing for half an bour, and sent troops into to walk over the enemy's shattered remains. This gave the Germans time to come out of their tunnels and machine gun a regiment or two of newfies to hamburger.

Military plans are OK -- if you do not have to carry them out, or take responsibility for them.

"It was a magnificent military value example. The only reason why the assault failed was that the dead men could not go further." (de Lisle)
