Oh no, it's not that bad, Ray. I've been here ten years now. You remember that big rock ridge opposite the visitor center on the other side of the lake? The ice was at the base of that ridge when I got here in 1992. Now it's well behind that, I'm guessing 300 feet. (By the way, the FS spent a bundle renovating the visitor center, and it's very nice now.)

I think the reality is that it's getting warmer now. I well remember in my job as a silviculturist I would find incense cedar out in the woods only 30 miles from the northern Oregon border. You probably know that incense cedar is common only near the southern border. Therefore it's a remnant of an earlier ecosystem in the north. I also had the northern most occurrence of sugar pine under my care. I protected both of those species religiously, knowing that they might have some genes we would need if global warming got really serious.

By the way, we also had the northern occurrence of western long-eared bat, and I did a lot of analysis on sun angles to lay out an area big enough to protect their cave so they wouldn't wake up from hibernation in the wintertime.

Someday the warming trend will reverse, and we'll get another ice age. Of course, you may not live that long, so I can understand your angst. I'm in it for the long haul.
