I visited a Circuit City store today...

and was stunned to see how AMD based systems were on display. Desktops were an eMachines Athlon XP, 3 different Compaq Athlon XPs, and an HP Athlon XP system. Sony, HP, and several Compaq notebooks with Athlons and Durons were also on display. About a third of the computers available were AMD based.

Where did this come from? Wanna_bmw and Elmer said that Intel was on a blitz and AMD had been pushed back into the whitebox and enthusiast markets....

< That's why I think they [INTEL] should be recognizing as much in costs as they have to spend each quarter to keep their plant current >

Please stop misusing accounting terms.

What you meant to say was that intel should EXPENSE all their capex COSTS. That would not be GAAP because it would violate the Matching Principle.

Dan3 Re...Do you think they paid $2 Billion per lot and building shell? $1 Billion? If it's much less than that, it fades into irrelevance, given the magnitude of Intel's capex expenditures.

Intel did put up 4 fabs. If just two of them are in last yrs capex, that could be 500 mil. I actually have no idea about what the proportion of a fab is building and land, and what part equipment. You also have bigger and more expensive equipment and more of the equipment, so I doubt if Intels figures are that crooked. Besides, if Intel was cheating , Intel would be more creative, and use something which would be hard to trace. I do anyway.

Take the perspective of an accountant, or, better yet, a micro-economist, not a book-keeper.

LOL, good one. With Anderson's troubles, that is suppose to tell me something?
