Sprint PCS has something like $17 billion in debt associated with the PCS tracking stock. Although the EPS are negative, they have a positive EBITDA. As far as the FON part of the company, it is totally irrelevant to the wireless division. The CEO said they would probably seperate the 2 divisions in the next 12 to 36 months. Maybe when market conditions improve.<g> I went to the PCS store on Friday. The reason for their shortfall in new adds this quarter is quite obvious. They have disconintued half a dozen models and have depleted their inventory of phones. They had almost no new phones in stock. I actually had to blow $99 on the KYOCERA 2235 since they don't carry any desktop chargers for my Sanyo 4500. I like the new voice quality of the phone and the blue light. The only negative is that the menu bar doesn't work as well as the Sanyo 4500. Why in the world PCS stop carrying cell phones? Hmmm... maybe it has something to do with 3g1X rolling out in 2 weeks. I think Sprint should be giving a public thrashing for the way they handled the reduced guidance in net subs this quarter. Every company that has launched 3G1X has witnessed the same depletion of new subs as they prepared for 3G - SKT, KTF, KDDI. However, I think management did it this way in order to cover their tracks since they have been selling 3G voice models for the past six months very aggressively to drive the voice capacity improvements once they activate the 1X service. People that just bought phones are gonna be a little pissed when they see the real 3G voice and data phones with cameras and other real tech gear - USB, PTT, 3X dial up internet replacement, and all the other BREW and JAVA applications. PCS is in the very best position of any technology company in the US. Since AWE has almost no debt, maybe they will decide to make a bid on PCS and incorporate a 3G GSM1X network. That way they can have the best of the GSM/GPRS/WCDMA frequencies and CDMA1X frequencies. One other strange thing is that the new data service will completely replace the wireless web. I think the message will become quite clear that PCS is going to charge full rip for whatever data applications they can. They will be charging by the MB. The cell phone will be a completely different device very soon. With new features like AOL IM, the days of waiting around for messaging will be over. The cell phone will tell us when we have our messages, voice mails, new v mails, etc... in addition to all the voice calls we get. I think this will have a profound impact our ability to have 24/7 access to all the 3G applications - mp3 or wmp, video or tv, BREW, voice, messaging. Last month, my cell phone usage tripled. It's just getting started. There is a young army of tech savvy kids that would die to get their AOL IM (or MSN or Yahoo) on their cell phones anywhere they go. Same would be true for Internet games and other gadgets that are buried on computers that sit at home. I can't wait until someone makes demonstrates a portable flat screen monitor for cell phones. I think the laptop needs to be reduced to a portable dvd player with a flat screen.
