Troops to remain on border: Fernandes

NEW DELHI, June 15: Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes said on Saturday that troops along the border with Pakistan would remain in position till they were required, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

"The country earlier had a bad experience with Pakistan when Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee went to Lahore on a goodwill tour and later the Kargil war was foisted on us," Fernandes said in Vijaywada city, where he went to attend a two-day conclave of his Samata party.

Fernandes said some opposition leaders had criticized the government for keeping troops in place for a long period, saying it would affect their morale, PTI said. However, the morale of the army personnel was high, Fernandes said. "I frequently visit the border areas to interact with them and find out ways to solve their problems," he said.-AFP
