"Canary stocks (and they change in time) are for me, QLGC and EMLX, KLAC for the semi (but I "play" CCMP) and IDPH for the Bio. For timing intraday moves I often look at a change in direction of the Trin indicator when coupled with stale indices and reversing tic. For instance, the market is dropping and the trin goes well above 1, let say to 1.50, then the market stabilizes, and during such a stable period, the tick goes from negative to positive and the trin declines to under 1.00, you will have a good (greater than 60% ) chance that an intraday turn is in the making to higher prices. The same type of changes and divergences applies to intraday tops. But it surely does not work all the time, too many news event cause local whipsaws.
