Yes, indeed. In my travels through the woods in Oregon, I found tiny little coal seams underneath hundreds of feet of basalt rock.

A geologist colleague proved that there once was a volcano bigger than Mt. Hood in this same area, the center of which is now a sizable steelhead spawning stream. Things change. Life goes on.

There is aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Some decay will emit CO2 but Coal was formed when the built up layers were buried. Peat bogs etc.... In longer cycle times I view it as sinking CO2.
