Soundview upgrades Photon Dynamics, cuts Genesis Microchip. We are hearing from sources that Soundview upgrades PHTN to STRONG BUY from Buy based on the belief that the co continues to see strong demand for its flat panel production test equipment; raises 2002-03 rev/EPS ests. Also, firm downgrades GNSS to HOLD from Strong Buy, saying that the current pause in the mkt is going to give competitors additional time to catch up to GNSS, translating into greater price pressure and share loss; slashes 2003 rev/EPS ests.

7:57AM Agere Systems, Motorola, Infineon enter DSP venture (AGR.A) 2.47: Company has joined forces with Infineon (IFX) and Motorola (MOT) to establish a new company focused on developing and marketing DSP technologies.
7:56AM Morgan Stanley cuts 2002 PC growth estimates : Morgan Stanley lowers their 2002 PC unit growth est to a range of -2% to +2% from 0% to +5% and lowers their PC unit point est to flat YoY from 3% growth; cites weakening motherboard shipments, microprocessor shipments, and software licenses over the past past month, and says that a lack of compelling applications and "as needed" buying patterns indicate that a large, concentrated PC upgrade cycle is unlikely.

7:38AM IBM estimates cut by Morgan Stanley (IBM) 77.14: Morgan Stanley says that hardware remains a low priority for 2002 IT spending and IBM may be experiencing a deterioration in services signings this quarter, which could lead to weaker than expected 2H02 results; also, firm believes IBM is struggling to meet its internal hardware targets and initiated a 90-day payment deferral plan this qtr. Cuts 2002 est to $3.85 from $3.95 and 2003 to $4.35 from $4.45 (both well below consensus).

7:28AM LM Ericsson: Rating cut may force company to repay banks (ERICY) 1.80: Bloomberg.com reports that a credit-rating cut by Moody's to one notch above junk may force company to repay about $418 mln to banks. Banks may ask Ericsson to repay a credit line backed by customer debt following the rating cut, and set aside 20% of a $1.3 bln credit as collateral.

7:20AM Broadcom upped to Overweight at Morgan Stanley -- valuation (BRCM) 21.24: Morgan Stanley upgrades to OVERWEIGHT from Equal-Weight based on valuation and firm's belief that co's fundamentals are recovering. Says bookings momentum has been strong, visibility has increased, and new products have begun to ramp.

6:57AM ESS Tech boosts Q2 outlook (ESST) 17.75: Co expects Q2 results to exceed previous guidance; puts EPS at greater than $0.34, compared to previous guidance of $0.24-$0.28 (Multex consensus $0.27); sees revs above $84 mln vs previous guidance of $76-$79 mln (consensus $78.03 mln). Attributes upside to growth in co's DVD market share and to the continued strong demand for DVD players worldwide.
