Must or should? I think companies should provide reasonable guidance and update it as appropriate. However, I seriously doubt there is a specific requirement and certainly no definitive guideline for what would constitute a change that merits a warning.

Recalling AMD's projections during 2000 they consistently were considerably on the low side and even the 4Q99 update was quite conservative. This had the unfortunate affect of using up their tax loss a little faster than anticipated with the result that the quarter that first included taxes was perceived to be far less of a blowout than it really was. Too much focus on the after-tax EPS in comparison to earnings estimates which assumed no tax (per AMD's guidance).
