Re: What I want to know is if anyone on this thread is willing to admit to Intel's capex money being well spent

If you're willing to assume that their yields are running 14% to 16%, then every dime was necessary.

Personally, I think Intel's yields are probably better than that, and a lot of the capex was unnecessary (and wasted).

Especially considering they may be about to be pushed into a rush conversion of all those new FABs to SOI.

Remember how much they had to spend to catch up to AMD in Copper, the last time they fell behind?

wbmw,

What I want to know is if anyone on this thread is willing to admit to Intel's capex money being well spent.

I don't know if there is a way to tell today. Intel has a huge .13u capacity coming online, and if there is a corresponding increase in revenues, the money was well spent. If the revenue stays the same or drops, than the money was not well spent.

How do you decide if the money was spent well?

Joe

It depends upon what part you are talking about? Capex would normally be for fabs and equipment. The 13u process and the equipment would have been well spent. The 4 new fabs, without any demand in sight, probably not, unless Intel is having AMD size problems in getting bin splits. It would be unlikely Itanic will be a huge seller for awhile, and xscale could take some time also, so I don't see the demand for the fabs yet.
