The Washington Post used an inaccurate headline. The lady was a forestry technician, not a forester and not a ranger as reported elsewhere. It's hard for me to understand how burning a single letter in a fire pit could result in such a conflagration. I don't think the whole story has been told yet. I have compassion for the lady, but those who lost their homes deserve more than compassion. I'm sure it will come at the expense of project dollars intended for some other purpose.

Foresters are professionals in that they usually must have a college degree. However, I've long argued that "professional" is as "professional" does, and many forestry technicians are the best people out there.

A Ranger in the Forest Service is a Line Officer in charge of a Ranger District, which is usually at least 100,000 acres. Being a Ranger is a coveted goal. I maintain it should be the crowning pinnacle of a person's career, but unfortunately it has been used as a political stepping stone all too often. I've never been a Ranger. It takes certain talents that I think are more well-endowed in others than myself.

The following statement is simply not true: Sometimes when people are exposed extensively to an incredible resource like the forest it becomes ordinary. Most people who work in the woods are in awe of it and wouldn't work anywhere else. However, there are stupid people in the forest just as there are stupid people in the city.
