OT: Actually, no, I don't think the pitchers actually hit the batters intentionally toooo often, but you have to consider what the game is supposed to be about. Is it accuracy, deception, speed and marksmanship? Should fear play a role in batting? If so, then why only in batting, why not extend fear of assault to other aspects of the game, say, for example, allowing a runner on base to assault a fielder before he can make a catch on his fellow batter's pop up? Most people think Don Drysdale actually had pretty good control and the fact that he hit over 150 batters in a 14 year career wasn't totally or even partially accidental. If there was a 2 base rule, I would bet Drysdale wouldn't have hit even 40 batters, but who knows.

In hoops, one player? The last time anyone wanted to change rules for 1 player was in the days of Wilt. No, I just think jump shots with reverse spin, correct loft, arc and angle of descent are more basketball like than throw down dunks. The 3 point shot is an excellent example of changing a rule to conserve the essential nature of the orignal game.

My point is you need to evaluate what is the purpose of the game and how to best achieve that. The NBA doesn't allow zone defense (well, it tries) and tries to control fouls so that basketball remains a no contact sport. But there's no reason why it shouldn't go ahead and allow body checking a la NHL, except it would change the game.

In any event, the original point was futbol/soccer could easily be "fixed," since it's clearly unsatisfactory to many/most now. But not, apparently, to enough.
