I don't have an answer for you, but I'm witnessing the same behavior on my box. We may be becoming victims of the "little 'puter on the prarie" syndrome.

I used to get a lot program freezes...or at least that is what I thought they were. The mouse pointer would freeze...I don't recall task manger helping. Basically it was a total lockup. It went on for years.

The problem was a defective mouse.
