I know you do not intend to imply that the stock patterns of individual stocks included in a particular index must correlate with the pattern for the overall index. Clearly, some stocks and funds will perform worse than or better than their closest benchmark index which represents and average. It don't see your point.

When it comes to picking individual stocks to buy or short, I pass as of now. I prefer the built in diversification of an index share or fund. Also, I am not currently willing to put in the time to do the research on individual companies. And I'm unwilling to trust individual stock recommendations of brokerage firm research departments, advisors and newsletter writers for obvious reasons.
