Annapolis is a great town, and we are only about an hour's drive from most places in Washington, but it is still a town, and many miles from the parts of Washington I most like. Bethesda is the second- nicest close- in suburb on the Maryland side, after Chevy Chase, which is right next to it. There is a fair degree of affluence, coupled with a lot of people, both in Northwest Washington and the various nearby suburbs. Thus, a variety of tastes can be supported, and a level of sophisticated competition among merchants and restaurateurs achieved. And, marvelously, it does not all require being rich, since there are many customers of varying affluence.

We used to belong to the Phillips Collection, the oldest modern art museum in the United States, but could not make members only events, because they occurred on weekdays. We are long time contributors to the Holocaust Memorial Museum, but have never taken advantage of member events, for the same reason. The American Film Institute periodically have wonderful retrospectives, but the series are always on weeknights. All of that sort of frustration should be gone, now that my wife does not have a terrible commute, my son is getting older, and we do not have to face an hour or so on the highway to get home..........
