Living in one of the most beautiful places in the country. Living in a community that in many ways reflects the best of what people envision small town America to be -- a caring, supportive community, where when I walk down the street (at least in winter, summer tourist season is another thing), I know most of the people I meet. Where announcements of funeral services are posted on the Post Office door and everybody reads them there because we only have a weekly newspaper, and by the time it gets into the paper (which goes to press Monday evening), it's usually too late. And where kids can still bicycle around town and be perfectly safe. And where when your child does something a parent needs to know about, the phone has rung and the parent knows it even before the child gets home. For me, these things are well worth the inconvenience of travelling to museums and plays for major events. And, of course, we have an excellent little community theater with some very gifted amateur actors and actresses, several of whom have gone on to professional success (John Wayne used to vacation here, for just one example), we have an excellent community chorus directed by the retired choral director of the Chicago Opera, we have some gifted musicians such as Andor Toth, who performs internationally and gives at least one and usually two concerts here a year, (see the Chamber Music San Juan website at cmsj.org , we have the internationally recognized Friday Harbor Marine Laboratories (http://depts.washington.edu/fhl/) whose faculty give lectures and lead field trips for residents from time to time, we have Elderhostel sessions here, and on and on. We have a very rich and varied cultural and intellectual life, less diverse than in larger communities, but in many ways of higher quality. So don't feel sorry for me (as if you ever would!)
