hi steve

you're certainly welcome for anything i might have contributed so far, but i don't think i've done much. <g>

as for, "'QD FastAndSafe' with no associated file or path shown. I've tried a find for the name and didn't find anything... Anyway to track what that may be?"...

it's a norton utilities (cleansweep) program ->

"QD FastAndSafe Automatically runs Fast & Safe clean-up from Norton/Quarterdeck Cleansweep. Deletes safe to remove files such as Temporary Internet Files (cache). Recommended you run it manually. Not required"
igknighttec.com

a quick tip, if you are not doing this already...

copy and paste the program name into a good search engine like google, and the results will give you plenty of insights. that's where i came up with the above, though i admit i recognized the cleansweep program name. quarter deck is a remnant of some defunct company that symantec bought out.

si'er formerly known as joe gave you a link to enditall the other day. it's a hot little program, and may just shut down the annoying little culprit that is causing the disk writes.

the other day i had to disconnect my cable modem to get norton speed disk (defrag) to run.

also, another cl thread member (E) spent considerable time here trying to straighten out the same thing you are facing. i do not recall how or if she got squared away.

hope this helps

:)
