I was very clear when I talked about A' s that I favor a standards based criteria for grading. Grading students against each other is not something I am willing to do. I prefer to measure a student against an objective clearly defined standard, and see how the student has preformed in relation to that standard. In California we now have clear standards and benchmarks for every grade. They are extremely detailed and very nicely laid out. All my lesson plans include the standards and benchmarks that are being taught. I explain these to the students at the beginning of every lesson.

It seems that you are all agreeing on a belief statement here about students and A's.

Neo and X were agreeing.

JC was disagreeing.

I'm agnostic at the moment, though I think there are real problems with the theory that everyone should be able to get an A just for doing the minimum work which the teacher expects of all students.

I am not interested in giving people "attitude" grades. Also, I cannot understand how the bell curve can apply to a roughly homogeneous group, which is the result of tracking. Perhaps it is my problem, having not had a formal probability and statistics course. Nevertheless, I am making a limited point, which is that we can gauge how well people are learning the material, and that have some idea of what should be covered in various courses by this time. If it is organized properly, it seems to me that the difference between an A student and a C student should be the amount of effort put in to master the material.......
