Perot seeks delay before testifying June 17, 2002 | DALLAS (AP) --

H. Ross Perot has asked for more time to gather papers and prepare for testimony about his company's role in advising energy companies accused of manipulating California's wholesale electricity market.

The chairman of a state Senate committee investigating California's energy crisis asked Perot last week to testify at a hearing this Thursday.

In a letter to the lawmaker, dated Saturday, Perot said he wouldn't be able to testify until mid-July because of commitments in Europe. But Perot insisted his company, Perot Systems Corp., was cooperating with investigators.

In a separate letter, Perot Systems lawyer David Schindler said he would make sure that state Sen. Joe Dunn's committee has access to all necessary documents by Thursday. Dunn, a Democrat, had asked for those documents by the end of last week.

"Let me assure you that Perot Systems has dedicated substantial resources to the time-consuming process of complying," Perot said in the letter to Dunn. "Senator, please work with David and we'll get this done."

Dunn has accused Plano-based Perot Systems of improperly showing energy companies how to take advantages of weaknesses in California's deregulated wholesale market to make profits in 2000 and 2001. Perot Systems helped install technology in 1997 for two California power exchanges.

The company has denied doing anything wrong, saying the information it tried to sell to energy companies came from public documents.

Dunn has said he would issue a subpoena if Perot would not come to Sacramento to meet with the committee.
