Students with real motivation don't really need teachers anyway.

I don't agree.

A student may be motivated to read, from having watched adults read and seen how much they enjoy it. But if nobody teachers them, it is unlikely they will ever learn to read.

There are lots of things I have been motivated to learn, but I needed the help of a competent teacher to learn it.

Of course, teachers can be books, parents, friends, etc. as well as formal school teachers. But I don't know any kid, no matter how motivated, who ever learned to throw a two finger splitter on their own. They needed somebody to show them and work on their delivery.
