Glen: If AMZN is not making money now would you say it is losing money at a slower rate? Is your position that they are just going bankrupt a little more slowly than you expected?

Amazon.com agreed to become an authorized Internet dealer for Sony, enabling the Seattle-based online retailer to get better prices on fast-selling electronics items such as digital cameras and hand-held computers.
Amazon is buying about a half-dozen product categories directly from Sony and seeking to expand what it can sell as an authorized dealer, said Frank Sadowski, Amazon's vice president of consumer electronics. The agreement was reached about two weeks ago, he said.

Amazon was long criticized by analysts for lacking a close relationship with Sony, the largest and best-known consumer electronics supplier.

The accord will help boost Amazon's sales because it can buy more of Sony's best-selling items at lower prices, Sadowski said. Being an authorized Sony dealer also might help Amazon cut its losses, analysts said. The company's electronics, tools and kitchen-item unit, its second-largest, had a loss excluding certain items of $140.7 million last year on $547.2 million in sales.

Becoming an authorized dealer requires Amazon to meet certain customer-service standards, including maintaining toll-free telephone numbers and e-mailing responses to product queries within 24 hours.

Among the Sony products Amazon is selling are camcorders, desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors and a mini-disc recorder, Sadowski said.

Sony still hasn't authorized Amazon to sell some of its most popular products, including television sets and DVD players, and representatives of both companies said they couldn't predict if and when that would occur.
