SAN JOSE -- Citing a concern of a possible “double dip” in the slumping semiconductor industry, the book-to-bill ratio for the worldwide chip-equipment business was 1.16 for the month of May, down from 1.31 in April, according to a report released late Monday by VLSI Research Inc.

Billings for this industry were $2.64 billion in May, while bookings were at $3.07 billion last month, according to VSLI Research's Industry Pulse Pro forecast. In comparison, billings were $2.25 billion in April, while bookings hit $2.93 billion for that month, according to the San Jose-based research firm.

However, while momentum in bookings activity slowed in May, the dollar value of bookings were still up over April. Of the total billings in May, $1.61 billion were for wafer processing equipment, $520 million for test and related equipment, $160 millon for assembly, and $350 million for service and spares.

VLSI Research's forecast for June calls for billings of $2.6 billion and bookings of almost $3.4 billion. This, in turn, would represent a book-to-bill ratio of 1.3, the research firm said.
