Well, I believe learning is a collaboration. People do not exist in a vacuum, and their interactions WILL influence them in myriad ways. Those interactions may be of the thoughtless variety, or they may be "lessons" which will guide the student long after the school house has been razed to the ground. Some of my greatest "lessons" in life came from teachers who communicated personal expectations, affirmations, and regards which could never be encountered in a text.

All motivation is a desire to be seen and heard, and to experience life in certain ways. Whether these desires are gross or noble is dependent on the quality of the collaboration we have with significant others in our lives. For many geat people, a teacher has been their MOST significant influence in turning them from lives of despair and uselessness. We can only wonder how many bright and promising children were allowed to drift into indifference and anomie for lack of guidance and motivation.
