The used heat, not radiation at American Gem for their upgrading process. Perhaps radiant heat.

When diamond drilling for diamonds (in kimberliet host rock), it is desirable to have stones in the bits that are highly oddly coloured to distinguish them from natural stones. They choose to colour diamonds which are artificial, red and this is done by irradiating them with a certain spectrum.
