I think we could wish that were so. But because it is often the case that students do not wish to learn, and do not come ready to learn, I think we have a duty as professionals to try to reach them, at whatever age they come to us. It is in our own self interest to try to help them.

Don't be silly. A teacher in in the business of teaching. That is like saying if a child does not want to eat it is not the parents responsibility to see that they are fed. Children do not chart their own course, for Christ's sake. That is why we have parents and teachers...
