If they had to, yes I think they could.
The need is not as apparent. If we had been in the decadent 20's- would we have thought the children of those years could have made the sacrifices necessary during the depression? Probably not. People do what they need to do to survive. When they can do more than survive things loosen up. I think I prefer to live in a loose and pleasant time myself, although I can be stoic if I have to be. It just isn't as much FUN.
