Reminds me of a friend's interesting old theory that if you go far left enough, you become indistinguishable from the far right, since in each case there is an overwhelming desire for state control of the individual and his thoughts.
A citizen's lot is pretty miserable under either a left-wing dictator or a right-wing one; the flavor of the opression doesn't really matter much.
