>Unless the incident was really outrageous beyond belief, I don't think a player that is already carrying a card should be carded for diving in the late stages of a tie game.

What if that player had been warned before (which I am sure he was since it was definitely just one of many of his flops)...What if the contact was so innocent and he made a total buffet all you can eat meal out of it? Do you let that crap go on....do you let Andersen still get away with crappy auditing...no, you send A MESSAGE...I am sure the message was heard today and because of it we will see even better games from now on.

>We all know that referees tend to back off and be a little more permissive in these circumstances: a marginal call that might be made in regulation time will often be allowed to pass by in extra time. I think that's a good thing: it lessens the referee's impact on the match and leaves more up to the players. I always appreciate the ref who gives the fellow a dirty look and says "play on".

There is no doubt in my mind that this ref had warned Totti before (probably more than once) about his flopping...it's just that the camera almost never catches "that look"...I know what you are saying and it makes sense, my take (as a ref) is that Totti was asking for it and he got it instead of concentrating on playing ball!

>Would it have made a difference?

Probably not...they were on life support, the goal was just a matter of time...for a team like Italy, instead of taking the game to the Koreans (hey even the Germans went up on the Cameroonians with 10 men for much longer!) they are finding a great excuse to blame their exposed shortcomings to the refs and conspiracy BS...

I don't hate the Italians really, but I got to tell ya, I always hated their catenacio invention<g>
