Aside from that, there's this logical conundrum that if Judaism is a religion, and Israel is the Jewish State, then how is Israel not a religious state?

Personally, I think separation of church and state is a good thing, and maybe even the key to the ascendency of the US and the western democracies. I don't think Israel is anything at all like, say, Iran or Taliban Afghanistan, but there is a certain blurring of lines there. Then again, there are these people that insist the US is a Christian Nation, but I don't much hold with them, even if one of them is currently the chief law enforcement officer of the US.

When I say Israel is not a religious state, I mean it is not a theocracy. That survey fully supports this point of view, indicating that most Israelis are secular Jews who wish to limit the influence of Orthodoxy on secular law.
