I'm a programmer, and I see a very different picture, although I agree that there is a tendency to want ridiculously exact matches in experience (unless you get to talk to the engineers on the project). But at the high end it's still a good career and will remain so.

It's even worse if you are the "manager" (which I was)
of a bunch of them. Talk about herding a bunch of
primadona cats! However, I miss the people and don't
miss the POLITICS that go with the job. Unfunded
mandates for info. that the idiots that are requesting
won't be able to use, since "they" didn't know enough
to ask the "right" questions. Gets back to the old
(very old) poem, "You gave us what we asked for, but
not what we wanted".
BTW, I came up through the ranks, and knew enough to
let me know if the "kids" were blowing smoke up my
a.ss.
