I could nitpick back at you that, "if it isn't readable, why bother?"

because serious issues are at stake. you wouldn't want your doctor to toss aside the New England Journal of Medicine in favor of well-written fluff about homeopathy; it's odd that people don't hold their generals, diplomats, and public policy opinion leaders to a similar high standard. Maybe we take dying in small personal quantities more seriously.

In general, of course, I absolutely agree that readability and accessibility are key, and should be prized highly.

won a National Magazine Award for excellence in reporting

Kelly and Remnick (Atlantic and New Yorker) deserved their awards this year. but I don't take those awards particularly seriously, when a Fareed Zakaria can lose out for the "commentary" prize to Michael Wolff, a Maureen Dowd-ish media gossip columnist from New York magazine.
