wbmw, like you said earlier why don't they just bomb Intel for q3/4? Just give away all cpus for $50. Flat Price them since @ .13 they'll cost $20-$30 total. Let's see what the OEMS do.

Wanna- they plan to transition most of the entire fab in one quarter

I'm not sure I agree. It's just one fab and they already have some months (including pilot runs) of experience with .13. I think the bigger risk is starting up Hammer on SOI. This is why I hope that AMD will work hard to put out faster Tbreds. They need a fallback if Hammer is delayed.

BMW...
RE:"I don't have intimate knowledge of manufacturing, but this sounds extremely high risk to me. AMD is desperate."

Neither do I but you don't need it. Knowing Mhz and the general market is enough. Enough to figure out AMD is under a lot of pressure. Intel is in better sahpe but it still isn't the good 'ole days either. I would be surprised to see some red this year in Q3. OTOH, it looks like AMD has completely blown the year like they did last year...so maybe Intel stays in the black this year.

In down market, I suspect the demand for lower speed, less luxurious chips, supercedes the top end. For this reason, AMD is eating at the underbelly of Intel...this being manifested in Intels margins dropping and the lack of Celerons. But Intel takes less of the brunt because they have the higher speed chips that allow them to take the cream off the top. AMD is left to sell at much lower ASPs.
You'd think that their cost per chip would be low and compensate somewhat. That never works.

Maybe AMD does have world class yields...yields on $50 chips that is...never mind lousy bin splits.
It matters but not like Mhz.
