Players Happy to Win Tough Match

The national team surprised the world again as they beat Italy to advance to the quarterfinals where they will face another strong European team Spain. It was an amazing accomplishment as they toughed out one of the most physical matches to be played at this World Cup:

Lee Woon-jae, goalkeeper

``The fans and the players came together as one and that’s why we were able to win the game. ``When Ahn Jung-hwan missed the penalty kick in the first half we were not discouraged. If there is a good goalscorer, there is always a good keeper. The Italian goalkeeper made a great stop.’’

Yoo Sang-chul, midfielder

``The result is unbelievable but even when we were down, we didn’t think we would lose. ``It was hard for our players in the first half to get through Italy’s defense. But as the game progressed, we found the weak point and attacked it very efficiently. We knew Italy’s defense would fall apart because we believed we have better stamina. ``After they scored the goal, it seemed like Italy tried to keep their lead by playing tight defensively. It is ironic that it is difficult to keep a goal lead when you try to keep it. Finally we did it and successfully turned the tables.’’

Lee Young-pyo, midfielder

``I’m very glad that we can continue to make history. We were able to win because we had better physical strength late in the second half.’’ ``(On Japan’s loss to Turkey) Regardless of their result, we were determined to win. Although we were down 1-0 in the second half, we didn’t feel that we were going to lose.’’

Seol Ki-hyeon, forward

``(On scoring the equalizer) I hadn’t scored in the previous games, but I believed in myself. I knew that I would be able to score at a crucial moment. Today is that day. When I put in the goal, I couldn’t believe it. I knew it was for real when I heard the cheers from the fans and the joyous cries of my teammates.’’

Song Chong-gug, defender

``I played three or four different positions today. I didn’t have any difficulty with the different positions. We have trained to play many roles. The coach (Guus Hiddink) ordered us to adapt to the changed positions in extra time.

Park Ji-sung, midfielder

``It is time for us to prepare for the quarterfinal match against Spain. I’m very happywith today’s result. ``After Italy were left with ten players, I thought we could win the match. And we tried hard to finish the game before it went to a penalty shoot-out. At halftime, the coach asked us to increase attacks along the wings and to do better with our changed positions.

Kim Tae-young, defender

``We were able to advance because of the Korean supporters. We will defeat Spain definitely. I ask for their continued support of our fans.’’ ``(On his condition) I’m okay. There is a problem with my nose. I think I need to go get an x-ray. But I don’t think it will affect me for the next game.’’
