zeta - If software, hardware, biot, retail, etc etc keep seeing declines in thier businesses as we saw yesterday then it isn't a question of 50% the market will just continue to decline since P/Es are only a measure that act as a sort of guide to valuation even if that, when companies generally are experiencing steady consistent growth.

If the very opposite is true then there is absolutely no reason to own stocks except for dividends which must be well covered, sustainable and to an extent growing.

Other than that there is no reason at all to own stocks where business is consistently declining.
