Plus, they make excellent foot rests and couch warmers. (:
They only make good footrests when they're lying at your feet. Usually they're either making sure you can't see the TV or trying to sit in your lap.
And I'll grant you they keep the couch warm, but they also take the springs right out of the couches. (We had hardwood floors put in last year and one of the danes would get a running start, jump on the couch at full gallop, and ride it across the living room. Now, that was fun to watch.)

And they are good watchdogs. They scare the pee out of people who are just walking past the house.
