the toads

After a good rain this past weekend, several mushrooms have sprung from the grass in the back yard. Once upon a time, we called them toadstools, and yesterday morning I saw a squirrel completely devour one of them, sans toad. It must've been a safe mushroom, as I've not seen any poorly-looking or hallucinating squirrels today.

It's been a wet year after a few years of dry.

Here, also. My perennials have finally choked out any weeds, the birds are more plentiful than I have ever seen, my birdbaths are continually getting fresh rain water, and my mallards have hung around since April. No ducklings yet, but I'm still hopeful. It's a beautiful time of year before the heat dries everything up.
