I would wholeheartedly agree that I don't know when the next upgrade/replacement cycle will happen, or how strong it will be.

I can state unequivocally that my discussions with CIOs and other IT managers in many companies indicate an unwillingness to replace existing equipment unless they can really demonstrate that the newer equipment will either result in a perceivable increase in performance to their users in a "real world" environment, OR that it will allow their users to do things that they couldn't do before. In that "real world" environment, the most complex application used by most people is Excel, and it will run just fine on most 2-3 year old PCs. I've evaluated this in the real world. The typical user can't tell the difference between a 500Mhz and a 1.8Ghz machine when doing their typical tasks. Some power users can use faster machines, but they're a tiny minority.

I suspect that at some point in the future some kind of hungrier software will come along, that will soak up lots more cycles. But it's not on the radar screen yet.

Personally, I can't discount the possibility of much slower growth for an extended period. I don't know that this will be the case, but I will keep it in mind as a possible scenario when I make my investment decisions. I'd give it about a one in three chance of happening. If you choose to believe that it can't happen, that's your choice too.
