That only shows how desperate "they" are in seeking a return.

The "they" which is nothing definite, and which all human beings are in a sense, though not as a sum, prescribes the kind of reality of everydayness. Every human has a "they" self. The "they" is there alongside everywhere, but in such a way that it disburdens the individual self from thinking clearly and distinctly and taking genuine action. Yes, it was always "they" who did it, and yet it can be said often that it has been "no one" in particular. The "they" is in the "I". But the "I" is a lot more than the "they".

I hope this clarifies somewhat "who" the "they" is, generally speaking.
