Two men in a BMW with false police markings drew up beside Ordzhonikidze's Volvo in northwestern Moscow during the morning rush hour and opened fire, the news services said. Police later found the abandoned and burning BMW; the body of one attacker, killed by shots fired by Ordzhonikidze's bodyguard, was inside, AFP said, citing RIA-Novosti. Ordzhonikidze, who works on foreign currency investments for the city and oversees Moscow's hotels and casinos, was not injured, Interfax said, citing police. His bodyguard was hit in the shoulder in the exchange of fire with the gunmen, it said. A student in a nearby taxi was also hurt, AFP said. The deputy mayor, head of the city government's international economic relations, survived a first attack in December 2000, when he was shot in the thigh and stomach. His driver died in the assault. The shooting is the latest in a series of attacks on political and business leaders. Galina Starovoytova, a Russian independent liberal deputy and former presidential adviser, was shot dead in November 1998 in St. Petersburg. Police, who said it was a contract killing, never identified any suspects. Deputy Mayor Valery Shantsev was seriously wounded in June 1996 when a bomb exploded as he left his apartment building. The head of the city government's education committee survived a shot to the head in May 1997. Other unsolved cases include the killing of St. Petersburg Deputy Governor Mikhail Manevich in August 1997 and the 1995 fatal shooting of Vladislav Listyev, after he was named chief executive of ORT Television, the state-run company that operates Russia's most widely watched television station. --Guy Faulconbridge in Moscow, or at gfaulconbrid@bloomberg.net, and Julian Nundy in Paris, through the London newsroom, +44 20 7330 7171.
