US May leading indicators up 0.4% By Rex Nutting
The index of leading indicators rose 0.4 percent in May, the Conference Board said Thursday. Economists were expecting a rise of 0.3 percent in the index, which is supposed to flag future economic activity. The index had fallen 0.3 percent in April, the only decline in the past eight months. Five of the 10 indicators rose in May, led by money supply, jobless claims and consumer confidence. The rise in the index over the past months "offers hope that economic performance may improve in the second half of the year," said board
