Nicely said - there is a wonderful book called the Non-Zero: The Logic of Human Destiny by Robert Wright that covers similar ground. A great read.

Semi OT: Wolf, you have a wonderful capacity to coherently address a breathtaking array of subjects, in a few paragraphs.

If I try to address the sweep of your comments, I'll fail. I'll just say that I agree, but I'd like to address some, in particular.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the liberals have lead us away from the brink of third world status through some serious committment to fiscal responsibility - just as there is no doubt in my mind that Jean's time has passed and he hangs on now like grim death.

It is the human plight. Jean does not see things as many
Canadians now do and cannot distinguish his interference
with Mr Mills in Ottawa with the nepotism so common in small
dictatorships.

If questioned, HC will argue passionately that it is working
hard without sufficient resources. They will believe this
with all their hearts and minds."

Just so. My assertion of venality is unproven. I note only a suspicious pattern of events related to DMX. The suspiciousness of these events is reinforced (in my mind, at least) by the twice-demonstrated leakage of privileged information from HC (in the form of selloffs in advance of the news) before DMX or the general public were informed.

My experience, from living in Quebec (and Canada, from coast to coast), and seeing the threads of corruption entwined in the fabric of daily existence is that both parties, the Liberals and what was once the Conservatives, embraced the illicit gains that came with the exercise of power.

This is demonstrably true in La Belle Province, but no less true in Ontario.

The prevalent feeling, away from the center of electoral power in Canada, is that we are disadvantaged by the cosy relationships that evolve at the center of the nation.

That there no longer is an honest broker, in the decaying wreckage of once-great parties that dared, that brawled, that led: merely a series of alternately-successful confluences of interest.

Your comment that M. Chretien has led us from the brink of being a third-world country is possibly true; I believe that it was the fortunate presence of Paul Martin that is principally responsible for that. Certainly M. Chretien showed no disposition to halt the spending spree initiated by Trudeau: he showed no marked restraint as a member of that government, and is at least partly responsible for our indebtedness, now.

There is no question that HC has insufficient resources. Yet committing more resources to a badly-organized, top-heavy and poorly-run organization seems only to perpetuate the problem. It is the equivalent of shovelling money into a failing business.

We have become a country that is administered, not led. Shackled by bureaucracy and regulation, decision-making becomes a consensual exercise, designed to prevent the loss of power. The center holds. The rot is perpetuated.

Can you imagine the Trans-Canada Railway, that daring, breathtaking gamble, being successfully executed by any Canadian government since you were born?

What would surprise me? Finding out that the corruption, and ant-competitive acts that I suspect do not exist.

Mediocrity. Incompetence. Lack of accountability. The list goes on, and on. Canada is dying a death of a thousand cuts.

Jim

Wolf,

A bit of a belated response, but WOW, what a post that was!

I needed a smoke and a nap after reading that! (and I don't even smoke)
