'dhimmitude' is the state of the 'dhimmis' -- non-Muslim 'People of the Book' (Jews, Christians and Sabeans) who are protected by Islamic law. It confers a protected but definitely second-class status. For example, dhimmis must pay special taxes and a dhimmi cannot testify against a Muslim in court. As far as I can see, in practice the status was whatever the local ruler said it was. In recent centuries, that was generally not good. Here's a recent reference:
