From 'pilpul' to 'ministry of truth' in one easy step? -chortle-

LB makes a good point about the 'The War on Terror'. Terror is what we were hit with on Sept 11th, so terror is what we're fighting. But Bush needs to identify who the enemy is, and he's been avoiding that, because any rational description of the enemy -- Islamists and those regimes that support them -- would add Syria and Saudi Arabia to the 'axis of evil'.

Mostly, I think they're just stumped how to put a simple handle on a complex reality. I don't think 'divergence from what is obviously true' is much of a problem for Bush outside of diplomatic circles, because most people don't pretend to know squat about the region, they just want to hear that we are going to get the guys that blew up the WTC before they do it again.

Ari Fleischer serves up daily. From what I understand, practically nobody in the press corps takes his words at face value;

I think the Press corps has got themselves to blame for Ari. This administration thinks they have the public on their side against the press,and owes the press nothing.

I don't think that telling the public that this is a "War on Terror" diverges from the truth enough to bother the public. A judgement call, of course.

I think the main problem for the administration is that Bush cannot decide what his message is going to be. Israel really seems to have him confused. He changes sides almost weekly.

From what I understand, practically nobody in the press corps takes his words at face value; they assume, now, that he is either lying outright, or distorting things, or deliberately avoiding giving any honest answers at all.

Funny... Many Americans, such as myself, feel the same way about the press corp...
